There’s a particular kind of quiet that settles over Honeypot Meadow just after dawn. It’s the sort of quiet you don’t get at home. No traffic, no notifications, just the low hush of mist rolling across the grass and the occasional call of a bird you can’t quite place yet.
This is what mornings look like at our Norfolk shepherd’s huts.
Coffee on the Steps
Most mornings start the same way: kettle on, mug in hand, and a few minutes sitting on the steps of the hut watching the day arrive. The mist tends to sit low over the meadow at this hour, drifting between the hedgerows and softening the edges of everything. It’s warm enough under a blanket even on cooler mornings, and there’s nowhere better to slow down with that first coffee.
Deer Grazing at First Light
Honeypot Meadow backs onto open grassland where deer often come through to graze in the early hours. Guests staying in the huts regularly spot them from their own doorstep – a family of reds moving quietly along the tree line, or a lone deer pausing mid-graze to check the coast is clear. Bring binoculars if you have them, but even without, you’re close enough to watch it happen.
A Morning Full of Birdsong
Norfolk’s countryside is well known among birdwatchers, and the meadow is no exception. On a good morning you might pick out yellowhammers in the hedges, skylarks rising over the open field, a buzzard circling above, and finches working through the seed heads near the hut. It’s an easy, unhurried way to notice how much life is out there before the rest of the world wakes up.
Into the Hot Tub
Once the coffee’s finished and the mist has started to lift, there’s one more ritual worth keeping: an early morning soak in the wood fired hot tub. Steam rising off the water while the meadow slowly brightens around you is hard to beat, and it’s the kind of small luxury that makes a countryside break feel genuinely restorative rather than just a change of scenery.
Plan Your Stay
If mornings like this sound like what you need, our Norfolk shepherd’s huts at Honeypot Meadow are ready whenever you are. Peaceful, private, and surrounded by the kind of nature you don’t need to go looking for.
